Tips For Local Artists
Tips for Local Artists

• Trademark your band/label name. It’s the first thing you should do if you want to be in the business. Log on to: http://www.uspto.gov/web/menu/tm.html and do your search. It’s free with the US Patent and Trademark Office

• Obtain Licensing for samples or covers. Any sample used on a track needs to be cleared with the holder of the copyright. A sample used without permission is considered stealing!

• Copyright your songs and recordings!!! Check out this website for more information
www.loc.gov/copyright.com or contact the Library of Congress to get an SR form. You can use this form to protect your interest in both the composition, as well as the recording, all in one form. This will save you a step. It’s usually $30 per registration form.

• Join ASCAP or BMI. These organizations represent songwriters. They collected monies from the businesses that play the music and pay the money as royalties to the composers and songwriters of the songs that get played. Log on to ASCAP.org or BMI.com.

• Get a barcode!!! This is imperative for tracking cd sales. Your record label manufacturer should be able to obtain this for you. If that’s not an option, you can obtain your own membership. There is a $750.00 lifetime membership fee to obtain your company UPC numbers. You can get an unlimited number of UPC numbers. Contact the Uniform Code Council. 7887 Washington Village Drive, Suite 300. Dayton, OH 45459. Call 937-435-7313.

• Register your release with SoundScan. Log on to soundscan.com

• Register your single with Broadcast Data Solutions. This will document your airplay. Broadcast Data Systems, 5055 Wilshire Blvd, 7th Floor. Los Angeles, CA 90036. 323-525-2280.

• If you need CD duplication. Contact QCA 513-681-8400 or Jewell Recording Studios 513-522-9336.

It’s tough to get in the game and tough to stay in the game. Pick one single and put all your efforts into promoting that song. Press up some CD's and MP3's for the club DJ’s and contact any record pools that you may know of. Hit the clubs, hit the streets, play your song for anyone who will listen. Come prepared to state your case and share your vision. Remember the music business is 10% about the music and 90% about how you handle your business!
